I got this book as part of my collection of violin making. I study the topic quite extensively, hoping to one day to make my own. Most of the books out there though are kind of pricey since it is such a small field. I was really glad to see this book for such a low price! It is a reprint from an early 20th century manuscript. It even contains the original ads that were included by shops and makers of the day. As far as I know, the information about the mixes and amounts for each varnish and so on hasn't change, although some of the historical, geographical information has. The author uses old names or countries like Siam for Thailand when describing where to procure materials such as beetle wings or fine powders. Obviously that might not be the case today, but it is very interesting to look at the recipes used and the theory behind why oil varnish is actually a means of sealing and protecting the instrument from decay while spirit varnish is just for show and doesn't protect the instrument or preserve it like Oil is intended too. Recommend for all luthiers and enthusiasts.Product details

Violin varnish and how to make it Georges Foucher 9781177697224 Books Reviews
Great information.
The only thing missing is a resource list. It is good to know it is hard to find the right materials, but it would be great to know where you might start looking.
It is an interesting old text about violin varnish, destined mostly to beginners or amateurs as well
Great in a historical sense, but many of the raw materials are prohibitively expensive or hard to find.
Great
Nice historical reference.
Disappointing. Pamphlet not a book. Only 31 pages long in large print. If you need information on this enigmatic subject I would suggest VIOLIN VARNISHES BY JOSEF & REINER HAMMERL instead.
Ok
